Distinguished and Famous people from Mornington Island

🎨 Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori

Sally Gabori was a senior Kaiadilt woman whose life and art remained deeply connected with Bentinck Island. Relocated with her community to Mornington Island in 1948, she began painting at the local arts centre in 2005, already in her eighties. The new medium gave extraordinary visual form to a lifetime of knowledge about Country, family places and memory. Her work moved rapidly into major exhibitions and public collections. Mornington was the working setting in which that late artistic career emerged, while the paintings’ cultural and personal geography continued to reach back to her Bentinck Island homeland.

📚 Dick Roughsey, Goobalathaldin

Dick Roughsey, Goobalathaldin, was born on Mornington Island in 1920 and grew up within a Lardil family and cultural world. Mission schooling and work as a stockman and deckhand formed later chapters, alongside carving and painting. With his brother Lindsay he helped develop a distinctive bark-painting style depicting Lardil histories. Friendship with pilot and artist Percy Trezise encouraged further work with painting materials and storytelling. His creative contribution grew from knowledge learned within family and Country, then found audiences through different media. Roughsey also held a public-jester role among his kin, a reminder of the humour within that cultural life.

🎨 Netta Loogatha, Birrmuyingathi Maali

Netta Loogatha’s account of her life describes removal from her island home to Mornington, later mainland employment and a return to community and land-rights work. She eventually spent dry seasons on her homeland, returning to Mornington during the wet. In older age, when those journeys became harder, making art helped keep memories of home and culture strong. Her paintings are therefore part of an active relationship with places and people, rather than simply attractive views. The art centre preserves her own words, giving the biography a personal voice alongside the finished works and exhibition history.
